काठमाडौंको स्वयम्भूदेखि केही पूर्व विष्णुमती नदीको किनारमा प्रसिद्ध शोभा भगवतीको मन्दिर छ । नेपाली तले शैलीमा निर्मित, कलाकृतिका विभिन्न आयामहरूले अति सम्पन्न यस मन्दिरको स्थापना लिच्छविकालतिरै भएको मानिन्छ । शोभा भगवती, पलान्चोक भगवती र नक्साल भगवतीलाई दिदीबहिनी मानिन्छ । यी तीन वटै मूर्तिहरू एकै कलाकारले सिर्जना गरेको विश्वास गरिन्छ । यिनको मूर्ति लिच्छविकालतिरै बनेको भए पनि मन्दिरको वर्तमान स्वरूप भने बेलाबेलाका पुनर्निर्माण र जीर्णोद्धारका क्रममा बनेको मानिन्छ । शोभा भगवतीको मूर्ति विक्रमकेशरीले विष्णुमती र भद्रमतीको दोभानमा प्रतिष्ठापन गराएको किंवदन्ती पाइन्छ । त्यस्तै, उक्त मन्दिर राजा शंकर देवले वि.सं. ६६४ मा जीर्णोद्धार गराएको मानिन्छ । तसर्थ शोभा भगवतीको स्थापना पनि लिच्छविकालतिरै भएको मानिन्छ । उपत्यकाका प्रसिद्ध शक्तिपीठमध्येकी एक शोभा भगवती हुन् । यस स्थानमा दशैंको नौरथाभर भव्य मेला लाग्ने गर्दछ ।
Shova Bhagawati is considered to be a sister of the Palanchok and Naxal Bhagawatis and it is believed that her idol was crafted by the same artist who crafted the other two during the Lichchhavi era. The present temple -- lying on the banks of the Vishnumati at the bottom of the Swayambhu hill -- is, however, a product of constant renovation through the ages. It is richly ornamented with fine examples of traditional arts and crafts.
It is said that the temple was founded when the idol was presented to Queen Bikramkeshari, the queen of Kantipur. Later, in 607 AD, Shankar Deva is said to have renovated the temple.
The Shova Bhagawati temple is an important Shakti Pitha and thousands of devotees throng to the temple on Saturdays and during the festival of Navaratra, when tantric rituals are performed in honour of the goddess.
