देवीलाई माता र माईका रूपमा पूजाआजा गर्ने नेपाली परम्परा रहिआएको छ । संसारी माई पूर्वी नेपालमा सामूहिक रूपमा पुजिने यस्तै प्रख्यात देवी हुन् । सामान्यतया संसारकै देवीका रूपमा यिनलाई खुला चौरीमा सालको एक पटक पूजाआजा गर्ने चलन छ । यिनका लागि मन्दिर र मूर्तिहरू निर्माण गर्ने चलन नरहे पनि पूर्वी नेपालको विराटनगर र रंगेली आदि ठाउँहरूमा भने यिनका भव्य मन्दिरहरू पनि बनेका देखिन्छन् । संसारी माईस्थान विराटनगर उपमहानगरपालिका–१४ मा रोडशेष र ट्राफिक चोकको बीचमा पर्दछ । मूल बजारछेउमै पर्ने यो स्थल धार्मिक, सांस्कृतिक र सामाजिक दृष्टिले समेत निकै महत्वपूर्ण छ । यसको उद्भवका बारेमा स्पष्ट जानकारी नभए पनि विराटनगरमा मोरङको सदरमुकाम सर्नुभन्दा अगाडिदेखि नै यस भेगमा स्थानीय आदिवासीहरूले संसारीको पूजाआजा गर्ने गरेको चाहिं बुझिन्छ । कालान्तरमा त्यसै स्थानमा संसारीको पूजाआजा हुने गरेको छ । स्थानीय बासिन्दाहरूमा प्रचलित लोकोक्ति अनुसार, प्रारम्भमा स्थानीय रतन कोइरीले सपनामा संसारीलाई देखेपछि यस स्थानमा यिनको पूजाआजा हुन लागेको हो । विराटनगरको संसारीको पूजा संसारी माईस्थानमा एउटा पीपलको रूखको फेदीमा हुने गर्दछ । यिनका साथमा अन्य देवीदेवताका ससाना मूर्तिहरू राखी तिनमाथि जस्तापाताले छाएर सामान्य मन्दिरको स्वरूप निकालिएको छ । यस स्थानमा शिवरात्रि, तीज र दशैंको नौरथा लगायतका अवसरहरूमा मेला लाग्ने गर्दछ । यसबाहेक पनि प्रत्येक शनिबार भक्तहरूको भीड लाग्ने गरेको छ ।
Situated in the heart of Biratnagar, Sansari Maisthan is a small shrine built at the base of a peepal tree and covered with pieces of tin. However, quite a few other temples have been built in the immediate vicinity of the shrine, such that Sansari Maithan today refers more to the complex of temples than to the actual shrine itself.
Sansari Mai has been worshipped as a mother goddess from ancient times, and it was believed that establishing temples for goddesses like her was not necessary; thus, devotional offerings to her were often made under a tree. The history of the Sansari Maisthan itself is unclear, but according to local legend a person began to worship the goddess under a peepal tree after dreaming of her, which in turn led to the founding of the shrine. Most devotees in and around Biratnagar make it a point to visit the temple at least once a week, especially on Saturdays.
