काठमाडौंको नक्सालमा प्रसिद्ध नक्साल भगवतीको मन्दिर छ । तले शैलीको भव्य मन्दिरमा नक्साल भगवतीको चिल्लो र आकर्षक मूर्ति राखिएको छ । वंशावलीहरूमा चर्चा गरिए अनुसार, यी देवीको स्थापना लिच्छविकालतिर भएको हो । उपत्यकाका नक्साल भगवती, शोभा भगवती र नाला भगवतीमा एकै प्रकारका मूर्तिहरू राखिएका छन् र यी देवीहरूलाई दिदीबहिनी मान्ने चलन छ । उता पलान्चोक भगवतीमा पनि त्यस्तै प्रकारको मूर्ति पाइन्छ । नक्साल भगवतीको उत्पत्तिसम्बन्धी एउटा किंवदन्ती अनुसार, कलियुग प्रारम्भ भएको करिब १००० वर्षपछि कान्तिपुरमा शासन गर्ने राजा विक्रमकेशरीको समयमा एक जना कलाकारले भगवतीको भव्य मूर्ति निर्माण गरी रानी नवसागरलाई दिएछन् । त्यसबाट अत्यन्त खुशी भई रानीले आप्mनै नाममा ती भगवतीलाई नक्सालमा स्थापना गर्न लगाइछन् । ती देवीको नाम नवसागर भगवती राखिएछ । कालान्तरमा यिनैलाई नक्साल भगवती भन्न लागिएको विश्वास गरिन्छ । यी देवीको स्वरूप ज्यादै डरलाग्दो भएकाले पहिलेपहिले यिनलाई खाल्टामा पुरेर राखिन्थ्यो र त्यहीँ पूजाआजा गर्ने चलन थियो । पछि शंकर देव नामक राजाले त्यो मूर्ति खाल्टाबाट निकालेर प्रतिष्ठापन गरेछन् र प्रेतचतुर्दशीका दिन रथयात्रा गर्ने चलन चलाएछन् । त्यसपछि समयसमयमा यी देवीको मन्दिर जीर्णोद्धार गर्ने कार्य भई नै रह्यो । दशैंको नौरथाको समयमा यस क्षेत्रमा ठूलो मेला लाग्ने गर्दछ ।
The temple of Naxal Bhagawati is said to house the idol that was crafted in the Lichchhavi era by the same craftsman who sculpted the Palanchok Bhagawati. Having had his right hand cut off after building the latter (it was said to be so beautiful that the King did not want him to build another like it again), he is said to have lost his left hand after building this statue, and his life itself after building the statue of Shova Bhagawati.
According to another legend, however, an artist sculpted the idol during the time of Shankardeva and presented it to Queen Navasagar. The queen is said to have been so happy with the idol that she built a temple for it in Naxal bearing her own name. But with the passing of time the temple began to be known as the Naxal Bhagawati instead of the Navasagar Bhagawati.
Today the temple is very popular among the general populace and thousands of devotees throng to it on Saturdays and during the festival of Navaratra.
