ललितपुरको लगनखेलमा प्रसिद्ध महालक्ष्मीको मन्दिर छ । हिन्दूहरूका ठूला त्रिदेवसरह महाकाली, महालक्ष्मी र महासरस्वती गरी ठूला देवी पनि तीन वटै छन् । यिनीहरू पनि त्रिदेवका अलग–अलग शक्ति हुन्, जसमध्ये महालक्ष्मी विष्णुकी शक्ति मानिन्छिन् । यिनलाई धनधान्यकी देवी मान्ने गरिन्छ ।
वंशावलीहरूमा पाइए अनुसार, उपत्यकामा महालक्ष्मीको स्थापना गर्ने कार्य गुणकामदेवले गरेका हुन् । किंवदन्ती अनुसार, उनले उपत्यकामा सहर बसाएपछि उनलाई सपनामा महालक्ष्मीले ‘म त्यतै आएर बस्छु’ भनेकी थिइन् रे । मध्यकालताका ललितपुरका व्यापारीहरू तिब्बतमा बसी व्यापार गर्ने गर्दथे । तिनीहरूले तिब्बतसँगको व्यापारबाट प्रशस्तै सम्पत्ति पनि कमाएको हुनाले महालक्ष्मीको मन्दिर बनाइदिएको हुन सक्ने देखिन्छ ।
उपत्यकामा सामान्यतया काली र अन्य देवीहरूका मन्दिर प्रशस्तै पाइन्छन्, महालक्ष्मी र लक्ष्मीका एकल मूर्ति र मन्दिर भने निकै कम छन् ।

 

The famous Mahalaxmi Temple is located in Lagankhel, Lalitpur. As a consort of Vishnu, Mahalaxmi is one of the three great Shaktis and is worshipped as the goddess of wealth and property. Single temples built in the honour of Mahalaxmi are rarely found in the Kathmandu Valley; as such, the cultural and historical importance of this temple cannot be overstated.

Some chronologies of Nepal state that the temple was established by Gunakamadeva after he dreamt of Mahalaxmi, who having built the city of Kantipur, expressed her desire to stay back in the Kathmandu Valley.
