काभ्रे जिल्लाको बनेपा सहरको उत्तरपूर्वी कुनामा प्रसिद्ध चण्डेश्वरीको मन्दिर छ । मध्यकालतिरको यो मन्दिर नेपाली तले शैलीमा निर्मित छ । यसको जीर्णोद्धार भने ने.सं. ८०१ तिर जगज्ज्योतिर्मल्लले गराएका थिए । हिमवत्खण्ड पुराणमा चण्डेश्वरी भगवतीले चण्ड नामक राक्षसलाई मारेको वर्णन पाइन्छ । यिनको स्थापना आनन्द देवले गराएका थिए भन्ने उल्लेख पाइन्छ । यिनलाई कन्यादेवी मानिन्छ र १० वर्षभन्दा कम उमेरका कन्याद्वारा यिनको पूजाआजा गर्ने चलन छ । चण्डेश्वरीको मूर्ति काठको छ । यी देवीको उत्पत्तिका सम्बन्धमा के किंवदन्ती पाइन्छ भने, एक पटक चण्डासुर नामक दानवले ब्रह्माको तपस्या गरी बलशाली हुने वरदान पाएछ । त्यसपछि उसले देवताहरूलाई सताउन थालेछ । देवताहरू चाँगु भेगमा चाँपका रूपमा लुकेछन् । चण्डेश्वरी देवीले पनि रक्तचन्दनको वनमा चाँपकै बोटमा लुकेर चण्डलाई मारिछन् ।

यसरी उनले देवताहरूलाई दानवको ताडनाबाट बचाइछन् । यही मान्यताका कारण यी देवीलाई चण्डेश्वरीका रूपमा पूजाआजा गर्ने गरिएको हो । चण्डेश्वरी मन्दिरका भित्तामा विभिन्न चित्रहरू छन् । मध्यकालिक यी भित्तेचित्रहरू निकै महत्वपूर्ण मानिन्छन् । हाल वर्षमा एक पटक यी भगवतीलाई खटमा राखेर बजार घुमाउने चलनसमेत छ ।

The Chandeshwori Temple of Banepa, with its tiered roofs and the fine medieval frescoes on its walls, is one of the most important Nepalese style temples of the Kavre District and is situated in the North-East corner of Banepa Bazaar. Established in the medieval era, it was renovated in NS 801 by Jagajyorti Malla. According to a story found in the Himavatkhanda Purana, the demon Chanda, after praying for a long time to Brahma, acquired for himself a weapon that could defeat the gods. Fleeing from the demon the gods hid inside a Chanpa tree in the Changu area. Among them was Chandeshwori, who killed the demon when he came in pursuit of them. Later, the temple was established in here in her honour. Chandeshwori is known as the girl goddess, and the priestess of her temple is always a girl child less than ten years old.
