The temple of Dhumra Varaha was founded in Chandole in Kathmandu after a Lichchhavi era idol of Varaha was found there a few decades ago. The Varaha form of Vishnu consists of two different forms -- Dhumra Varaha and Swet Varaha; the Varaha of Varahakshetra in Eastern Nepal is a Swet Varaha, while the Varaha of Chandole is a Dhumra (brown) Varaha. According to a Pauranic story, once a demon named Hiranaksha kidnapped the Earth Goddess and took her to Patala (Hell). Then, Vishnu incarnated himself in the form of a boar and made the journey to hell, killed the demon, and brought the Goddess back. The idols of Varaha and Varahi are crafted in keeping with this story.
