बूढानीलकण्ठ मन्दिर शिवपुरीको फेदीमा पर्दछ । बूढानीलकण्ठमा चतुर्बाहु नारायणको मूर्ति पोखरीमा सुतेको अवस्थामा छ । प्राचीन कालको नेपालको सबैभन्दा ठूलो प्रस्तर मूर्ति यही हो । बूढानीलकण्ठको मूर्ति लिच्छविकालमा बनेको मानिन्छ । यसका
लागि मन्दिर भने बनाइएको छैन । मूर्ति खुला आकाशमुनि पोखरीमा छ । बूढानीलकण्ठको उत्पत्तिका बारेमा जनमानसमा अनेक
किंवदन्तीहरू पाइन्छन । तीमध्येको एउटामा के भनिएको छ भने, प्राचीन कालमा नेपालका एक राजा भारतका बद्रीनाथ र केदारनाथ लगायतका तीर्थमा सालिन्दा जाने गर्दथे । त्यसबाट प्रसन्न भई हरिहरले ती राजालाई ‘म नेपालमै उत्पन्न हुन्छु, मेरो दर्शन गर्न अन्यत्र जानुपर्दैन’ भनेछन । त्यसपछि बूढानीलकण्ठको यहाँ उत्पत्ति भएछन । अर्को एक किंवदन्ती अनुसार, एक जना किसानले खेत खन्दा माटोमुनि पुरिएर रहेको यस मूर्तिमा कोदालोले चोट लागी रगत बग्न लागेछ । त्यसपछि मूर्तिलाई खनेर निकाली ती किसानले त्यहीँ पोखरीमा राखेछन । ती किसानको नाम नीलकण्ठ भएकाले उक्त मूर्तिलाई पनि बूढानीलकण्ठ भन्न थालिएछ ।
अझ अर्को किंवदन्ती अनुसार, एक पटक राजा प्रताप मल्लले बूढानीलकण्ठको मूर्ति उखेली हनुमानढोका दरबारमा ल्याउन सोच बनाएछन । तर सपनामा बूढानीलकण्ठले ‘तिमीहरूले मेरो दर्शन नगर्नू, गरेमा मृत्यु हुनेछ’ भनेकाले मल्ल र शाह राजाहरूले यिनको दर्शन गर्दैनथे । पछि प्रताप मल्लले दर्शन गर्नका लागि बूढानीलकण्ठको एउटा मूर्ति बालाजुमा स्थापना गराए, जुन अझै छँदै छ । बूढानीलकण्ठमा वैशाख एकादशी तथा कृष्णाष्टमीका अवसरमा मेला लाग्ने गर्दछ । अन्य बेलामा पनि भक्तहरूको घुइँचो हुने गर्दछ ।
Budhanilkantha is a four-armed idol of Lord Vishnu located at the bottom of the Shivapuri Hill. It is one of the biggest idols crafted during the ancient period and is not housed within a temple; rather, it is found lying in a supine posture on a small pond. Different legends abound as to the establishment of the idol, with some stating that it was built by a king, and another that it was found in a field by a farmer named Nilkantha. Malla had another idol of Budhanilkantha built in Balaju and it was there that the kings used to pay their respects to the deity.
Quite a few people visit Budhanilkantha every day to pay their devotions, but it is especially popular during the Baisakh Ekadasis, during which a grand fair is held in the area.
