The temple of Adinath -- sometimes also known as Karunamaya, Lokeshwor, and Mahadev -- is located on the top of a high hill in Kathmandu. It is said to have been built after a tantric practitioner named Suwal Acharya found a jasmine flower floating at the confluence of the Bagmati and Vishnumati rivers, where he was meditating. He is said to have taken the flower to Chobhar, where it intermingled with the Bodhisattva there. After this the temple was built and a custom of Rathayatra, which used to begin here and go
up to Patan and Pashupatinath, was established.
The idol of Adinath is believed to have been stolen by some Tibetans and taken to Tibet .
The Jatra of Adinath was stopped after the idol was stolen and was reestablished in the sixteenth century only when another idol of
Adinath had been placed in the temple. The temple today is a three-roofed structure which houses dozens of idols, both Hindu and Buddhis
काठमाडौंको चोभारमा कीर्तिपुरतिर पर्ने उच्च थुम्कामा प्रसिद्ध आदिनाथको मन्दिर छ । डाँडाको टुप्पामा रहेका आदिनाथ लोकेश्वरलाई करुणामय पनि भनिन्छ । यिनलाई आदिनाथ, महादेव र मत्स्येन्द्रनाथसमेत भन्ने गरिन्छ । आदिनाथको उत्पत्तिसम्बन्धी किंवदन्ती अनुसार, परापूर्वकालमा सुवाल आचार्य नामक तान्त्रिक चोभारदेखि उत्तर नक्खु दोभानमा साधना गरी बसेका रहेछन् । साधनामा बसेका बेला ती तान्त्रिकले तल पानीमा एउटा फूल तैरिंदै गरेको थाहा पाएछन् । उनले त्यसलाई उठाएर कलशमा राखेछन् र चोभारमा लगेछन् । त्यो फूल बोधिसत्वको मूर्तिमा समाहित भएछ । त्यसपछि जहाँ पूmलका रूपमा बोधिसइभ्व पाइए, त्यहाँ वार्षिक स्नान गर्न लागिएछ । कालान्तरमा आदिनाथको रथयात्रा पशुपति र पाटनसम्म लग्न थालिएछ । एक पटक तिब्बतीहरू काठमाडौं आएका बेला रथ खोलामा अल्झिएछ र आदिनाथको मूर्ति तिब्बतीहरूले चोरेछन् ।
अर्को किंवदन्ती अनुसार, तिब्बतीले मूर्ति चोर्न खोज्दा रथबाट एक सुन्दर युवक उठेर हिंड्न लागेछन् । पछि तिनलाई मन्त्रले बाँधेर राखिएछ । आदिनाथसँग सम्बन्धित अझ अर्को किंवदन्ती अनुसार, एक पटक नन्दगौले नामक गोठालाले आनन्दादि लोकेश्वरलाई चोभारमा देखेछन् । त्यसपछि उनी गाईवस्तुको भाषा बुभ्mन लागेछन् । एक पटक उनले गाईले आप्mना बाच्छालाई त्यस ठाउँमा तान्त्रिक सम्पत्ति भएको बताउँदै गरेको सुनेछन् । तिनले त्यस स्थानमा तान्त्रिक सम्पत्ति खोज्न लाग्दा एउटा मूर्ति भेट्टाएछन् र त्यसलाई बोधिसत्व मन्दिर चोभारमा राखेछन् । लिच्छविकालदेखि पूजा हुँदै आएको आदिनाथको मूर्ति तिब्बतीद्वारा चोरिएपछि यहाँ जात्रा बन्द भएको थियो । पछि इसाको सोह«ौं शताब्दीपछि यहाँ पुनः आदिनाथको अर्को मूर्ति राखेर रथयात्रा सुरु गरियो । वि.सं. १६९९ मा यहाँ अर्को मूर्ति राखिएको हो । हाल आनन्द लोकेश्वरको मन्दिर तीन तहको छानायुक्त छ । यहाँ बौद्ध र हिन्दू देवीदेवताका विभिन्न मूर्तिहरू पनि छन् ।
