Considered an extremely important temple from a religious and historic perspective, the Jaleshwor Mahadev lies in the centre of Jaleshwor, the headquarters of Mahottari District. The temple is a Gumbaja style construction which includes an enclosed pond where the object of worship -- a plain Shivalinga -- lies. Historical records indicate that the temple has been known since the days of the Janaka dynasty of Janakpur.
Thousands of people visit the temple during the festivals of Shivaratri, Balachaturdashi, and Makarsamskranti. The temple is also the site of a big fair lasting through the month of Shrawan, during which devotees throng to the temple so as to offer water to the deity, a ritual that is also carried out on one particular day of every lunar month.
महोत्तरी जिल्लाको जलश्ेवरमा प्रसिद्ध जलेश्वर महादवेको मन्दिर छ । जल या पानीयक्तु पोखरीमा रहको देवता हुनाले यिनलाई जलश्ेवर महादेव भनिएको हो । जलेश्वर महादवेको मन्दिर गुम्बज शैलीमा निर्मित छ, जसमा आकर्षक बुर्जाहरू निकालिएका छन् । मन्दिरको गर्भगृहमा एउटा पोखरी छ, जहाँ जलेश्वर महादेवको शिवलिंग राखिएको छ । यस मन्दिरको ख्याति ३०० वर्षअगाडिदेिख बढन् थालेको मानिन्छ । तर यो स्थान जनकवंशदेिख नै ख्यातिपा्रप्त थियो ।
जनकपुरनजिकै पर्ने हुनाले जलेश्वर महादेव निकै प्रख्यात छ । जनकपुरका परम्पराहरू पनि यस स्थानसगँ जाेिडएका छन् । जनकपुरको पञ्चकोशी परिक्रमा जलेश्वर सम्म पनिपुग्ने गर्दछ । साथै शिवरात्रि, बालाचतुर्दशी र माघे संक्रान्तिका अवसरमा यहाँ ठुलो मेला लाग्दछ । साउन महिनाभर पनि जलेश्वरमा भक्तहरू खचाखच हुने गदर्छन् ।
जानकी विवाहका अवसरमा जलेश्वर नजिक मटिहानीबाट माटो जनकपुर लगिएको थियो भन्ने विश्वास गरिन्छ । विभिन्न पौराणिक गन््रथहरूले जलेश्वर महादेवको महिमागान गरेका छन् ।
