काठमाडौंको मरुटोलमा मरु गणेशको मन्दिर छ । यो गणेशस्थानमा गणेशका थुप्रै मूर्तिहरू छन् । केही मन्दिरभित्र र अन्य बाँकी खुला चौरमा छन् । मरु गणेशलाई हनुमान्ढोका गणेशको स्थान दिइएको छ । राजदरबारमा हुने धार्मिक कार्यमा सम्मानपूर्वक मरु गणेशको पूजा गर्ने चलन लामो समयसम्म चलेको थियो । राजकुमारको पास्नीको समयमा राजकुमारलाई मरु गणेशको दर्शन गर्न ल्याउने चलन थियो । राज्याभिषेकमा पनि राजा–महाराजहरू मरु गणेशको दर्शनमा आउने गर्दथे । यस मन्दिरमा वि.सं. १९०४ सालमा सुरेन्द्रविक्रम शाहको पालामा सुनको छाना हालियो । यो गणेशको स्थापना एघारौं–बाह«ौं शताब्दीतिर भएको मानिन्छ । यो गणेश उपत्यकाका चार गणेशमध्येको एक हो ।

मरु गणेशको उत्पत्तिका बारेमा एउटा किंवदन्ती पाइन्छ । त्यस अनुसार, उहिले यस क्षेत्रमा एक जना सत्पात्र गृहस्थ बस्तथे । उनले एक रात अशोक वृक्ष झलमल्ल उज्यालो भएको देखेछन् । त्यस रूखमा के रहेछ भनेर हेर्न जाँदा उनले गणेशलाई रूखमाथि चढ्दै गरेको देखेछन् । त्यो थाहा पाएपछि गणेश अलप भएछन् । ती गृहस्थले पछि त्यहीँ गणेशको मन्दिर बनाएर मूर्ति प्रतिष्ठापन गराएछन् । यस मन्दिरमा गणेश मूर्ति सुखासनमा बसेको छ । यसलाई अशोक विनायक पनि भनिन्छ । गणेश मन्दिर मरुसत्तलकै एक अंगका रूपमा रहेको छ ।

 

 

The temple of Maru Ganesh is situated in Marutole of Kathmandu and is also sometimes known as the Hanumandhoka Ganesh and Ashok Binayak. It was of immense importance to the royal family and all religious occasions and important cultural ones -- such as the coronation ceremony -- were first consecrated by a visit to the temple. It is also one of the four famous Binayaks of the Kathmandu Valley.

The temple was first built in the eleventh century. According to legend, it was founded when a householder espied Ganesh climbing up an Ashoka tree one night. The later temple underwent extensive renovation during the reign of Surendra Bikram Shah, including the installing of a golden plated roof donated by the King.

The temple is a part of Mausattal and the object of worship is an idol of Lord Ganesh sitting in Sukhasan
