According to an inscription, the temple of Palanchok Bhagawati at Palanchok, Kavre, was established by a woman named Des Bhattarika at the time of Manadev, during the Lichchhavi era. The local legend, popular among residents of the area, however, states that the Goddess appeared to the then residents in a dream and instructed them to house her idol in a safe place. While carrying the idol they stopped to rest at the top of the hill, but when they tried to resume their task they found that they could no longer move the idol. They took this to be a divine sign and thus established the temple at the spot itself.

The idol itself is of exquisite craftsmanship, and it is believed that the then ruler of the kingdom cut off the right hand of the sculptor so that he would never be able to fashion another idol of such beauty. Legend has it that the same sculptor would go on to carve the idols of Nakshal Bhagawati and Shova Bhagawati, both of whom are said to be sister of Palanchok Bhagawati.

Palanchok Bhagawati is considered to be an extremely powerful deity, and it is believed that whenever the idol of the Goddess sweats a grave political crisis arises in the country.
